Often referred to as the Little Serengeti, Tarangire National Park is a fantastic place to spot some of the most famous wildlife in Tanzania away from the crowds. Although known for hosting some of the largest African elephant herds on Earth, Tarangire is also an excellent location for bird viewing. Along the Tarangire River, you are guaranteed to see vivacious wildlife drinking from its banks, regardless of the season.
Tarangire National Park is home to more than just elephants and birds— observe Tanzania's ancient baobab trees (known as the "tree of life") towering above the savanna. Massive herds of wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, and antelopes frolic and graze throughout the park. If you have the time, a night game drive will allow you to catch a glimpse of the nocturnal animals who roam the park.
And don't forget to visit the Maasai Steppe for a spectacular view of the unique, marshy landscape of Tarangire National Park!
Established in 1970, Tarangire National Park became the 6th largest National Park in Tanzania. This park is most popular for its large elephant herds and for the mini-great migration that takes place during the dry season— ~250,000 animals enter and pass through the park!
